Whatever it is called, a computer cookie consists of information. When you visit a website, it sends a cookie to your computer. Your computer stores it in a file located in your web browser. (To find them more easily, look for a file named “cookies”.)

You can read more about cookies on Wikipedia.

What Is the Purpose of Cookies?

The purpose of cookies is to remember your actions on a site and to help the website track your activity during your visit. Cookies can be very useful. For example, many online retailers use cookies to keep track of the items in a user’s shopping basket while they browse the site. Without cookies, your shopping basket would reset and be empty every time you clicked a new link on the site, making it impossible to shop online.

A website can also use cookies to keep a record of your last visit.

Different types of cookies track different activities on a site. Session cookies are used only while a user is actively browsing a site; once they leave, the session cookie disappears. Tracking cookies can be used to keep long-term records of multiple visits to the same site. Authentication cookies track whether a user is logged in and, if so, under which name.

How We Use Cookies (Which Types) and Why

5.1. We use cookies for analytics and performance.

We use only the essential cookies we need to monitor site traffic, i.e. analytics/performance cookies, and only anonymously, which means that at no point can we identify the visitors/users of our site.

We use them to improve the user experience and to understand which pages need improving.

5.2. We use cookies for targeting.

These cookies are linked to the Facebook pixel feature on the Facebook social network and are used to target audiences more precisely when placing adverts.

Third-Party Cookies

6.1. Google

We use Google Analytics, a product of Google Inc. (address: 1600 Amphitheatre Parkway, Mountain View, CA 94043, USA).

Google Analytics uses cookies, which are text files placed on your computer, to help websites analyse how users use the site. The information generated by the cookie about your use of the site will be sent to Google and stored on servers in the United States.

Please note that on this website Google Analytics has been extended with the code “gat._anonymizeIp();” to ensure the anonymised collection of IP addresses (known as IP masking).

When IP anonymisation is activated, Google truncates the IP address by anonymising its last octet for Member States of the European Union and other parties to the Agreement on the European Economic Area. Only in exceptional cases will the full IP address be sent to a Google server in the USA and truncated there.

On behalf of the website operator, Google will use the IP address information and other data to evaluate your use of the website, compile reports on website activity for website operators and provide the website operator with other services relating to website activity and internet usage.

Google will not associate your IP address with any other data it holds.

You can refuse the use of cookies by selecting the appropriate settings in your browser. However, please note that if you do so, you may not be able to use all the features of the website you are visiting.

6.1.1. Disable Google Analytics

You can also prevent Google from collecting and using data (cookies and IP addresses) by downloading and installing a specific add-on.

Please note that on this website the analytics code has already been extended with the “anonymizeIp” attribute to ensure the anonymised collection of IP addresses.

If you do not want Google to collect other data about your visit, you can install the add-on for the Chrome browser.

You can find more information about Google Analytics on our Privacy Policy page.

6.2.
